Pye is a commercial city on the east bank of the downstream Irrawaddy River in central Myanmar (Burma). It has a population of 128,700 (2003 estimate). It is located in the transitional area between the humid Irrawaddy Delta and the arid zone of central Burma, and trade of agricultural products from the surrounding areas is thriving. Traditional industries are carried out in the city, producing silk textiles and lacquerware. It is also an important transportation hub, with a river port and a transit point for water transport on the Irrawaddy River. It is connected by rail to Yangon (Rangoon), which was the capital and the center of politics, economy, and culture for a long time, and is also connected by national highway. In the east, roads run across the Pegu Mountains to Taungoohe in the Sittang River basin, and in the west, roads run from the opposite bank across the Arakan Mountains to the Bay of Bengal. In the center of the city is the 60-meter-tall Shwesandaw Pagoda, which is visited by many believers on the annual November holiday. At Phu Mo Za, 8 kilometers south, are the ruins of Sri Kshetra, the capital of the Pyu people, who founded a state in southern Burma around the 8th century, including earthworks, pagodas, and temples.
