A reddish-brown soil formed from hard carbonate rocks (limestone, dolomite, etc.). The name Terra Rossa comes from the Italian word for "red earth" in the Mediterranean region. In soil classification, it is also called Rhodoxeralf (USA) or Chromic Luvisol (FAO/UNESCO). It consists of iron and aluminum hydroxides and clay left behind after the carbonates have dissolved, and is generally poor in humus and has no calcium carbonate accumulation layer. 土壌分類学的にはロードゼラルフRhodoxeralf(アメリカ)あるいはクロミック・ルビソルChromic Luvisol(FAO/UNESCO)ともいわれる。
