…It is a pot-shaped vessel placed on three solid legs. Earthenware appeared during the Longshan culture in the late Neolithic period, and bronze vessels were produced from the mid-Yang period onwards. Both vessels were used until the Han period. Only from the mid-Yang period to the early Western Zhou period was there a rectangular box-shaped vessel called a square ding, with four hollow legs, some of which were over one meter tall. All bronze dings had a pair of ears, and were carried by passing them through a crosspiece called a gen or by hanging them on a hook called a yoku. …
