The largest species that can reach a total length of 7m are the saltwater crocodile C. porosus (illustration), found in tropical Asia and northern Australia, the American crocodile C. acutus , found in tropical America, the Orinoco crocodile C. intermedius , and the Nile crocodile C. niloticus (illustration), found in Madagascar, Africa. Next is the marsh crocodile C. palustris , which reaches 5m, and the others are around 3m. Of these large species, the only ones that are particularly dangerous to humans are the saltwater crocodile and the Nile crocodile, the latter of which is considered safe in some areas. …
