A woman whose occupation is to assist in normal childbirth and provide health guidance to normal pregnant women, puerperal women, and newborns. Abnormal cases are handled by obstetricians. They may also give advice on family planning. They are also called midwives. They are regulated by the Public Health Nurse, Midwife, and Nurse Act (1948), and only women can be midwives. In 2002, the act was renamed the Public Health Nurse, Midwife, and Nurse Act, and the term midwife was changed to midwife.
