Japanese: 助産婦 - じょさんぷ

A woman whose occupation is to assist in normal childbirth and provide health guidance to normal pregnant women, puerperal women, and newborns. Abnormal cases are handled by obstetricians. They may also give advice on family planning. They are also called midwives. They are regulated by the Public Health Nurse, Midwife, and Nurse Act (1948), and only women can be midwives. In 2002, the act was renamed the Public Health Nurse, Midwife, and Nurse Act, and the term midwife was changed to midwife. Qualification can be obtained by passing the national midwifery examination, and the license is granted by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.

正常分娩(ぶんべん)の介助や，正常な妊婦，産褥(さんじょく)婦，新生児の保健指導などを業とする女性。異常な場合は産科医が扱う。家族計画の助言に当たることもある。産婆とも呼ばれた。保健婦助産婦看護婦法（1948年）の規制下にあり，女子のみである。2002年同法は〈保健師助産師看護師法〉と改称され，助産婦は助産師に改められた。資格は助産師国家試験に合格すれば得られ，免許付与者は厚生労働大臣。
