However, as the number of investigations and crackdowns on crimes under federal law increased, such as the Antitrust Act in the 1910s and Prohibition in the 1920s, the FBI's scope of activities expanded and the size of the bureau grew. In particular, after 29-year-old John Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) was appointed director in 1924, the organization rapidly modernized and expanded (Director Hoover reigned at the bureau for 48 years until his death in 1972).
