After graduation, he published his works while working as a reporter for Shonen Bunko, Yomiuri Shimbun, Shusai Bundan, and other publications, and his first collection of novels, Shujin (Shujin) (1907), earned him the recognition of being a leader of the neo-romantic movement. Meanwhile, in 1910, he published his first collection of children's stories, Akai Fune (Red Ship), and wrote both novels and children's stories thereafter. In 1926, he made his famous declaration, "I will become a children's story writer from now on," and he followed this path until his death. Mimei's children's stories can be broadly divided into three styles: early neo-romanticism, humanitarianism in the Taisho period, and lifeism from the Showa period to the postwar period. However, his essence is a world of successive images rather than a story development, and he had a strong characteristic that could be called a poetic fairy tale. …
