'Ali Bey

A Mamluk (slave soldier) ruler of Egypt. Born in the Caucasus. Became a Mamluk under the Egyptian strongman Ibrāhim Katkhudā. After Ibrahim's death in 1754, he ruled Egypt for about 20 years, calling himself shaykh al-balad (head of the state) and even minting coins. He declared independence from the Ottoman Empire, conquered the Hejaz and Syria, and attempted to establish direct relations with Russia, but was betrayed by his Mamluk vassal Muhammad Bey and was defeated and killed in Lower Egypt.

エジプトのマムルーク(奴隷軍人)出身の支配者。カフカスの生れ。エジプトの実力者イブラーヒーム･カトホダーIbrāhīm Katkhudāのマムルークとなってベイに立身。1754年のイブラーヒームの没後約20年にわたってエジプトの実質的な支配者となり，〈国の長shaykh al‐balad〉を称して貨幣をも鋳造した。オスマン帝国に対して独立を宣言してヒジャーズとシリアを征服，ロシアと直接関係を結ぼうとしたが，臣下のマムルーク，ムハンマド･ベイに裏切られて下エジプトで敗死した。
