The capital of the Vosges department in eastern France. It overlooks the branching point of the Moselle River and developed around a 10th century monastery. It was part of the French Kingdom from 1422 to 1461, then the Duchy of Lorraine, and became French in 1766. In the 18th century, printer and print dealer Perlan achieved success with multicolor prints, and it became widely known as a print production center. The art museum that houses many prints is also famous. In the old town on the right bank, there are the Basilica of St. Maurice (11th to 14th centuries) and the town hall (18th century). After the Franco-Prussian War, Alsace became German territory, and industry was transferred here, which led to it becoming an industrial center for cotton, rubber, chemical fibers, etc. Population 39,480 (1990).
