(1) A ballroom and entertainment theater on Place Blanche in Paris. The huge red windmill (Moulin Rouge) attached to the building was the symbol of this theater, from which it took its name. It opened as a ballroom in 1889, and offered cabaret-style shows as an attraction. In particular, the lively and erotic dance known as the French cancan (cancan) became a popular attraction, and it became a representative entertainment venue in fin de siècle Paris. The atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge at that time can be well conveyed by the many masterpieces by H. de T. Lautrec, such as At the Moulin Rouge (1892).
