A village in Tomamae County, Rumoi Subprefecture, northern Hokkaido. Population 1928 (1995). Facing the Sea of ​​Japan, the village area is made up of the Teshio Mountains and coastal terraces, with national and prefectural forests occupying a large area. The town is at the mouth of the Shosanbetsu River, with settlements scattered along the rivers and at the mouths of the Furebetsu River and Mochibetsu River. Fishing has been carried out since the 1840s, and growth grew especially from around 1890 when a succession of immigrants came to fish for herring and mine gold. In 1898, a group of immigrants came from Toyama, Niigata, and Kumamoto prefectures, and development progressed thereafter.

北海道北部,留萌(るもい)支庁苫前(とままえ)郡の村。人口1928(1995)。日本海に臨み,村域は天塩(てしお)山地と海岸段丘からなり,国有林と道有林が広い部分を占める。市街地は初山別川河口にあり,風連別(ふうれべつ)川,茂築別川などの川沿いおよび河口に集落が散在する。1840年代から漁場経営が行われ,とくにニシン漁および砂金採取のための移住者があいついだ1890年前後から伸長し,98年富山,新潟,熊本の各県からの集団移民があり,以後開拓が進んだ。
