A device used to treat arrhythmias, it is primarily used to restore normal rhythms in atrial fibrillation (a condition in which the atria no longer contract and the heart moves in a rapid, wavy motion) and ventricular fibrillation (a condition in which the ventricles no longer contract and the heart moves in a rapid, wavy motion). Atrial fibrillation and ventricular fibrillation occur when different parts of the atrial and ventricular muscles are electrically active separately, so a defibrillator passes a high-voltage direct current through the heart, causing the entire heart to contract simultaneously, aligning the entire heart. It consists of a discharge body and electrode paddles that pass the current through the body, and the required electrical energy is expressed in watts per second.

不整脈の治療に使われる器械で，主として心房細動(心房の収縮がなくなり細かい波状に動く状態)，心室細動(心室の収縮がなくなり細かい波状に動く状態)を正常調律に戻すときに用いられる。心房細動や心室細動は心房筋，心室筋の各部分が電気的にばらばらに活動しているため起こるもので，除細動器は，心臓に直流の高圧電流を流して心臓全体を同時に収縮させた状態におき，全体の足並みを整える。放電する本体と電流を生体に流す電極paddleとからなり，必要な電気エネルギーをワット･セカンドWatt secondで表す。
