A deciduous shrub or small tree of the Rutaceae family with one genus and one species that is food for swallowtail butterflies. It has thorns on the branches and is widely used as a hedge in warm regions. The branches are green, flat, and angular, with thick thorns 1-7 cm long. The leathery leaves are alternate and trifoliate. The petioles are 1-3 cm long and winged. The leaflets are ovate to elliptical or obovate, 2.5-6 cm long, with rounded tips, slightly concave apexes, wedge-shaped bases, and no or blunt sawtooth edges. In spring, yellowish-white flowers 3.5-5 cm in diameter appear on the branches of the previous year before the leaves appear, but soon turn yellow.
