...At Bazin's urging, he began writing for the film criticism magazine Cahiers du Cinema, which was launched in 1951, and also wrote harsh reviews for the weekly magazine Arts, where he was nicknamed the "gravedigger of French cinema." In 1958, he founded the film production company Les Films du Carrosse, named after Jean Renoir's film The Golden Coach (Le Carrosse d'Or), and released the short film La vie en vie (after which, he produced all his films through his own company, protecting the independence of his filmmakers). His next film, The 40s, won the Grand Prix at Cannes, and he was heralded as one of the "flagships of the French New Wave" alongside Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Chabrol, who made their directorial debuts in the same year. ...
