Mastoid process

…the temporal bone is extremely complex, containing the inner and middle ear. mastoid process A thumb-sized rounded projection on the human temporal bone that is located behind and below the external auditory canal. It is thought to have developed to accommodate the attachment of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
