1864‐1951 Korean independence activist. Born in Daegu. Passed the civil service examination in 1882. Became a member of the enlightened faction along with Kim Ok-gyun and others. In 1883, he studied at the Army Toyama School in Japan. Returning to Korea in 1884, he participated in the Gapsin Coup in December of that year and became a military commissioner, but was defeated and fled to the United States via Japan. In 1886, he obtained American citizenship and took the American name Philip Jaisohn. He became a doctor in 1893, but returned to Korea at the end of 1895 and was appointed advisor to the Central Council.
