Tetsuto Uno

Chinese philosopher. Born in Kumamoto. Professor at Tokyo Imperial University. After retiring in 1936 (Showa 11), he became professor emeritus at the same university. He also served as professor emeritus at Beijing University in the Republic of China, and president of Jissen Women's University after the war. In terms of research, he inherited the tradition of Chinese studies that had been established since the Edo period, while also incorporating Western philosophy, and played an enlightening and pioneering role in the establishment of new Chinese philosophy and the history of Chinese philosophy in Japanese academia. He is the author of many books, including "Lectures on the History of Chinese Philosophy."

中国哲学者。熊本生まれ。東京帝国大学教授。1936年（昭和11）定年退職後は同大学名誉教授。さらに中華民国の国立北京(ペキン)大学名誉教授、戦後は実践女子大学長などを務めた。研究の面では、江戸時代以来の漢学の伝統を継ぐとともに西欧の哲学を取り入れ、日本の学界が新しい中国哲学および中国哲学史学を確立するうえで啓蒙(けいもう)的、先導的な役割を果たした。『支那(しな)哲学史講話』ほか著書多数。
