Higashisanjo-dono

Japanese:
Higashisanjo-dono
One of the aristocratic residences in Heian-kyo. It is considered a representative example of the shinden-zukuri style. It was said to have been the residence of Fujiwara no Yoshifusa in the early Heian period, and Fujiwara no Kaneie built a new residence here in 969 (Anwa 2), which became the village residence for his daughters who entered the Imperial Court, where princes were raised, and which was also used as a Sato Dairi (a temporary palace for the residence of the emperor's maternal relatives). Kaneie was later called "Higashi Sanjodono," and his second daughter, Senshi, was given the title of "Higashi Sanjo-in." After that, it was passed down to successive heads of the Fujiwara clan, and ceremonies such as the establishment of an empress and grand banquets were held here. It was burned down in 1166 (Jin'an 1). Heian-kyo was crossed from north to south by Suzaku-oji, with Sakyo to the east and Ukyo to the west, and each was divided into nine blocks by a main road running east to west. These blocks were called Ichijo, Nijo, etc. from north to south, and this mansion was located in Sanjo (south of Nijo-oji) in Sakyo, occupying two cho (1 cho is about 120m square) from north to south, hence the name. ◇It is also called "Tousanjo-dono."
