Around 1176 - 1235 Church leader and saint who achieved independence for the Serbian Church. The third son of Serbian King Stefan Nemanja, his real name was Rastko. He became a monk on Mount Athos and returned to Serbia in 1208. At the time, Serbia was caught between the powers of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, but Sava wanted to adopt Eastern Orthodoxy as the state religion, so he lobbied the Kingdom of Nicaea and was appointed the first Archbishop of Serbia in 1219. Thus, the Serbian Church gained independence and the power of the Catholic Church declined. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
