〘名〙① (パーリ語 ammā 「母・女性」の意からか) 出家して仏門に入った女性。具足戒を受け、中古ごろは頭髪を肩のあたりでそぎ、のちには剃るようになった。敏達天皇一三年に善信尼らが出家したのが日本での始まりとされる。尼僧。尼法師。比丘尼。※書紀(720)敏達一三年九月(前田本訓)「司馬達等の女(むすめ)嶋を度(いへで)せ令む。善信尼(アマ)と曰(い)ふ」② ①の自称。※梁塵秘抄(1179頃)二「あまはかくこそさぶらへど、大安寺の一万法師もをぢぞかし」③ 平安時代以後、髪を肩のあたりで切りそろえた①の髪。また、そのような童女の髪。あまそぎ。※とりかへばや(12C後)中「うれしきままに、かしらあはせなどして、髪もかき垂れなどしてみれば、あまのほどにふさふさとかかりたり」④ 肩のあたりで髪を切りそろえた童女。おかっぱあたまの少女。親しみの気持をこめていうことがある。室町時代以降に使われた。※咄本・軽口露がはなし(1691)三「内にあまを寝させてきたが、もし声のたかきに目がさめれば迷惑」⑤ (「阿魔」「阿摩」とも) 特に関東で、近世以降、少女または女性をいやしめて呼ぶ語。あまっこ。あまっちょ。※浜荻(庄内)(1767)「庄内にて年のゆかぬ下女をあまといふ。江戸にてはののしる辞とす」⑥ ほおべに。※俳諧・崑山集(1651)六夏上「色木の実あまのことぞや梅法師〈正陳〉」⑦ めすの犬。牝犬。※読本・夢想兵衛胡蝶物語(1810)前「牝狗(アマ)を追ふ白黒は、乱走して水をかけらるるを厭(いと)はず」⑧ キリスト教の修道女。※えすぱにや・ぽるつがる記(1929)〈木下杢太郎〉ハビエルノ城「彼の呼びにやった尼さんが二人来た」⑨ 狂言面の一つ。尼を表わす。「泣き尼」に用いる。※わらんべ草(1660)四「一尼(アマ) 一比丘尼比丘定にきる」
