Japanese: 大菩薩峠 - だいぼさつとうげ

A pass on the border between Enzan City (now Koshu City) and Kosuge Village, Kitatsuru County, in eastern Yamanashi Prefecture. It is 1,897m above sea level. To the northwest is Daibosatsu-rei (2,057m), which has been selected as one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan. The name of the pass is said to come from the fact that Minamoto no Yoshimitsu, who was heading to Oshu during the Gosannen War, was able to pass through here thanks to the protection of Hachiman Daibosatsu. However, because it was a difficult pass to cross, there was a custom of unmanned baggage collection, known as Omine Naka-watashi. It belongs to Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, and there are hiking trails from the valleys of Nikkawa, a tributary of the Fuefuki River, and Kosuge River, a tributary of the Tama River, and there are good views of the Chichibu Mountains, Mt. Fuji, and the Southern Alps. A bus runs from Enzan Station on the Chuo Line to the foot of the mountain.

山梨県東部，塩山(えんざん)市（現・甲州市）と北都留郡小菅村の境にある峠。標高1897m。北西には日本百名山にも選ばれている大菩薩嶺（2057m）がある。峠の名は後三年の役で奥州に向かった源義光が当地で八幡大菩薩の加護によって通行できたことに由来するという。しかし難儀な峠越えであったため，無人の荷物引取りの習俗があり，大峰荷渡しとよばれる。秩父多摩甲斐国立公園に属し，笛吹川の支流日川(にっかわ)，多摩川の支流小菅川の谷からハイキングコースがあり，秩父山地，富士山，南アルプスなどの展望がよい。中央線塩山駅から麓までバスが通じる。
