Stable land mass (English spelling)

Japanese: 安定地塊 - あんていちかい（英語表記）stable land‐mass

A region of the earth's crust that underwent violent movements in ancient geological times and has since stabilized; in contrast to a tectonic belt. It is also called a craton. It is composed mainly of granite and metamorphic rocks and has a complex geological structure. Later sedimentary rocks may be stacked almost horizontally on top of this. A distinction is made between shield-like land, which stabilized after Precambrian movements and has almost no subsequent sediment, and table-like land or plateau, which is covered with a considerable amount of sediment (Figure). 古い地質時代に激しい変動を受け，その後は安定化してしまった地殻の部分で，変動帯と対照的な地域。クラトンcraton(剛塊)ともいう。主として花コウ岩や変成岩類からなり複雑な地質構造を示す。この上に後の時代の堆積岩が，ほぼ水平に重なることもある。先カンブリア時代の変動後に安定化し，その後の堆積物がほとんどない楯状地と，かなりの堆積物に覆われる卓状地または台地とが区別される(図)。【植村武】
