Langkasuka (English spelling)

An ancient kingdom that existed in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula. In 515, it paid tribute to the Chinese Liang Dynasty under the name "Langya Xiu." At the time, it was recorded that "it has existed for over 400 years since its founding," but this alone is hard to believe. Relics that tell of exchanges between Chinese and Indian civilizations, such as the remains of a Hindu temple and Chinese pottery, have been excavated from within its territory, which extends from Patani on the east coast to Trang and Takua Pa on the west coast. The kingdom's name is recorded in Chinese historical documents from the late 7th century, but it seems to have collapsed soon after, and the Ligor inscription from 775 marks it as the territory of the Srivijaya Kingdom in Sumatra.
