A former town in Kishima County, central Saga Prefecture. It occupies reclaimed land from the early modern period facing the Ariake Sea. Rainfall is low, so irrigation using reservoirs and wells is widespread. Rice is the main crop, but lotus root and onion cultivation is also popular. Seaweed is cultivated along the coast. 佐賀県中部,杵島(きしま)郡の旧町。有明海に臨む近世以降の干拓地を占める。雨量が少なく,溜池(ためいけ),井戸などによる灌漑(かんがい)が普及。米作を主にれんこん,タマネギの栽培が盛ん。沿岸ではノリ養殖を行う。2005年1月杵島郡有明町と白石町へ編入。20.55km2。5686人(2003)。
