Epitome - Epitome

…He studied astronomy under Georg von Peuerbach (1423-61) and became his collaborator. When Bessarion, a Byzantine humanist and theologian who also worked on the task of unifying the Eastern and Western Churches in the wake of Turkish oppression, visited Vienna (1460), Peuerbach suggested to Peuerbach that he create an accurate abridged edition of Ptolemy's Almagest. Peuerbach carried out this task using the 12th century Latin translation by Gerard of Cremona. After Peuerbach's death, Regiomontanus, who took over the task, accompanied Bessarion to Rome, studied Greek, and completed the Epitome, an abridged edition of the Almagest (1463). In the end, this translation of the Epitome by Poerbacha and Regiomontanus was printed and published in Venice in 96, but it contained some new data since Ptolemy's work, and pointed out some of Ptolemy's errors, especially regarding the moon. It is said that after reading this publication, Copernicus became convinced that Ptolemy was not perfect.
