This lake is located in Katashina Village, Tone County, northeastern Gunma Prefecture. It was dammed by lava from the Nikko Shirane volcano, and has an elliptical shape with a circumference of 2.2 kilometers and a surface elevation of 1,428 meters, a maximum depth of 50 meters. The lake's green water is surrounded by a virgin forest of birch and beech trees, giving it a mysterious look. Marunuma Onsen is located on the north shore, and Ichinose Power Station is located on the east shore, where rainbow trout are farmed. It is included in Nikko National Park along with Sugenuma Lake to the east and Ojirinuma Lake to the west. Marunuma Dam is located between Ojirinuma Lake and the dam. This dam is the largest buttress dam in Japan, and the Marunuma Dam has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Konsei Road (National Route 120) runs along the south shore.
