...According to another popular belief, lizards are said to fertilize through their ears and lay eggs from their mouths, and were also carried by the Virgin Mary as an allegory of the virgin birth. In Greek mythology, when Demeter, searching for Persephone, drank wine to quench her thirst, she transformed the man Abas, who mocked her, into a lizard. From this story, the lizard is considered to be an animal that embodies the vice of disrespecting superiors.
