Japanese: ヘラムシ(篦虫) - ヘラムシ

A general term for crustaceans in the Idoteidae family of the isopod order. As the name suggests, the body of a bilgebug is almost oblong or rectangular when viewed from the back, and is flattened dorsally and ventrally. The carapace is well calcified and hard. The head, seven thoracic segments, and the abdominal segments that follow are fused to a considerable extent with the telson segment, which varies depending on the species, forming a long, plate-like abdominal telson segment. Over 600 species are known, most of which are marine, living from shallow waters to the deep sea. A very small number of species are known from freshwater areas.

等脚目ヘラムシ科Idoteidaeの甲殻類の総称。ヘラムシの体は名のように背面より見ると，ほぼ長楕円形または長方形をしており，背腹に扁平。甲皮はよく石灰化して固い。頭部，胸部7節およびこれに続く腹節は種類によって異なるが，かなりの程度に尾節と融合しており，長大な板状の腹尾節をつくる。約600種以上が知られ，そのほとんどは海産で，浅海から深海まで生息している。淡水域からもごく少数の種類が知られている。
