Temple architecture

Japanese:
Temple architecture
Temple architecture in Japan was introduced from China along with Buddhism, but the structure and style were adapted to Japanese tastes and refined, leading to wooden architecture being the mainstream. There are over 50 ruins of temples from the Asuka period, including Asukadera, but in the Nara period, the Seven Great Temples of Nara and other provincial temples were founded and spread throughout the country. Thereafter, as Buddhism developed, the style and layout of the temple buildings changed, and structures evolved in various ways, including the Chinese style, the Great Buddha style, and Japanese style architecture. Temple architecture declined after the Meiji period, but with the enactment of the Law for the Preservation of Ancient Shrines and Temples in 1897, excellent temple architecture began to be protected as cultural properties, and historical research progressed accordingly.
