The Sounds of the Sutras - Issaikyo Ongi

The Sounds of the Sutras - Issaikyo Ongi

A commentary on the sounds and difficult words in Buddhist scriptures. It was created during the Tang Dynasty in China, and there are two types of commentary by this name.

(1) This work was compiled by imperial order by Gen'o of Daiji'en Temple around 648 (the 22nd year of the Jōgan era) and consists of 25 volumes. It is called "Gen'o On'yō." It provides commentary on idiomatic expressions in 454 sutras, vinaya, and commentaries, referring to Sanskrit pronunciation. It is the oldest extant on'yō, and is valuable for its accurate interpretations and for quoting many ancient books.

(2) Written by Huilin between 783 (some say 788) and 807 (some say 810), this work consists of 100 volumes. It is called the "Huilin Ongi." With reference to the Gyokuhen, Shuowen, Zirin, Zitong, Gujin Zhengzi, Moji Dian Shuo, and Kaiyuan Moji Ongi, it provides commentary on idioms in 1,220 sutras and treatises, beginning with the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra and ending with the Sutra on Protecting Life and Releasing Birth. The distinctive feature of this work is that it inherits the Xuanyang Ongi and further refines it by adding the ongi of Yunko, Ji, and Huiyuan. It is the most precise ongi.
