Seattle - Seattle (English spelling)

Washington is the largest city in the state of Washington, United States, located on the eastern shore of the Puget Sound in the midwestern part of the state. It has a population of 563,374 (2000). It is an important commercial and industrial center and transportation center in the Pacific Northwest region, and also plays a leading role in the state's culture. Blessed with a good harbor, Washington has a strong character as a port city, handling 15 million tons of coal, grain, and other cargo annually, two-thirds of which is bound for Asia. The development of industry, which is the mainstay of the city's economy, has been remarkable, with more than 2,200 companies concentrated within the city limits. The aircraft industry, centered around Boeing, the city's largest employer, is a representative example, along with electronics, steel, food processing, clothing, pharmaceuticals, machinery, woodworking, and printing, and fishing and forestry are also thriving.

It was established as a lumber town in 1851. It showed signs of development around the time the railroad opened in 1884, but it suffered several strikes and fires for a while, and full-scale development did not come until the Alaska Gold Rush in 1997, playing an important role as the only connection point to Alaska. The opening of the Panama Canal in 1914 was the factor that led to a great leap forward as a port city, but after World War II, the aircraft and shipbuilding industries developed. It was the site of the Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition in 1909 and the 21st Century Exposition in 1962. In contrast to the rapid modernization, it is blessed with beautiful nature such as Lake Washington, a warm climate, and is an ideal recreational area. The Space Needle, which was the site of the 1962 World's Fair, has become a cultural symbol as the Seattle Center, which features a coliseum, opera house, theater, exhibition halls, and more. University facilities have also contributed greatly to the city's educational and cultural development, including the University of Washington, founded in 1861, Seattle University, and Seattle Pacific University. The city's name comes from the name of an Indian chief.
