Joking relationship

A relationship in which teasing, joking, and joking with one another is considered an obligation, and in which such teasing is accepted without anger. Generally, this is one of the special patterns of behavior seen among kinship relations, and is the polar opposite of an avoidant relationship in which contact is severed or limited. In patrilineal societies, the father is avoided and the maternal uncle is in a joking relationship, while in matrilineal societies, the maternal uncle tends to be avoided and the father in a joking relationship. There is also often a joking relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, and in some cultures, from the man's perspective, the wife of his brother or the wife's sister is prominent as a joking relationship, while in other cultures, this relationship is prominent as an avoidant relationship. Generally, a joking relationship is accompanied by the exchange of gifts, and therefore, if gift exchange is repeated, even those who are avoidant can turn into joking relationships.

からかったり，ふざけたり，冗談を言い合うことをむしろ義務とし，またそれを怒らずに受止める関係。概して親族的関係者の間にみられる特殊な行為様式の一つとして，接触を断絶もしくは限定する忌避関係と対極をなすものである。父系社会では父が忌避関係となり母方おじが冗談関係にあり，母系社会では母方おじが忌避関係で父が冗談関係となる傾向がある。また祖父母と孫との間は往々にして冗談関係であり，男性からみてその兄弟の妻とか，妻の姉妹などが冗談関係として顕著な文化もあるし，さらに同じくその関係が逆に忌避関係として顕著な文化もある。一般に冗談関係には贈り物の贈与交換が付随しており，したがって逆に贈与交換がたび重なると，忌避関係である者さえ冗談関係に転化することもある。
