[Died] December 24, 1982, Paris. French poet, novelist, and critic. He studied medicine, but after World War I, he became one of the leading advocates of Dada and Surrealism, and founded the magazine Littérature with A. Breton and P. Soupault. He published works such as the poem collection Le Mouvement perpétuel (1925) and Le Paysan de Paris (26), depicting the poetic atmosphere of a big city, under the slogan "automatism." In 1927, he joined the Communist Party. The following year, he met E. Triolet, who would become his lifelong companion. He published a collection of poems praising communism, Hourra l'Ourl! (34), and novels from the standpoint of socialist realism, such as Aurélien (45) and Les Communistes (49-51), in which he denounced bourgeois society and raised the demands of the working class. During World War II, he published the poems Le Crève-cœur (41) and La Diane française (45) as a resistance poet, and also published a collection of love poems, Les Yeux d'Elsa (42), which sang of the eternal theme of lyric poetry. He was a poet who combined socialist ideals with a rich humanity.
