Official documents prepared by judicial or other institutions to certify the process and content of legal proceedings. (1) In civil proceedings, there are records that record the oral petitions of the parties, oral argument records, preparatory proceeding records, settlement records, and records of waiver or admission of claims. (2) In criminal proceedings, they are generally prepared by court clerks. For procedures at trial dates, there are trial records, and for questioning of witnesses, experts, and interpreters, there are individual questioning records. In investigative procedures, when investigative agencies question suspects and witnesses, they prepare records called deposition records.

訴訟手続などの経過および内容を公証するために裁判機関またはその他機関が作成する公文書。 (1) 民事訴訟上は，当事者の口頭の申立てを記載する調書，口頭弁論調書，準備手続調書，和解調書，請求の放棄・認諾調書などがある。 (2) 刑事訴訟上は，原則として裁判所書記官が作成する。公判期日の手続については公判調書，証人，鑑定人，通訳人の尋問については各尋問調書。また捜査手続では，捜査機関が被疑者，参考人を取調べたとき調書を作成するが，これを供述録取書という。
