…After the end of the war, he remained quiet in Koshu and his hometown, but from 1946 he began to work actively as a writer, winning the first Yomiuri Literature Prize for “Closed Today” (1950) and other works. After that, he gradually matured and published a series of works expressing sharp human insight in a refined style, including “Hyōmin Usaburo” (1956), which won him the Art Academy Prize, “Ekimae Ryokan” (1957), “Chinpindo no Shunin” (Master of the Hall of Chinpins) and “Bushu Hachigata Castle.” In “Black Rain” (1966), he succeeded in depicting the disaster of the atomic bomb through the everyday perspective of anonymous ordinary people, and received the Noma Literary Prize. …
