An armed conflict that arose from an anti-government movement against the Guangdong government in China. In 1924, merchants opposed to the taxation policy proposed by the Guangdong government formed the Merchant Alliance Defence Headquarters under the leadership of Chen Lim-po, a comprador for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. After intense friction, including the purchase of weapons by the merchants, government confiscations, strikes, intervention by the British authorities, and the return of seized weapons, the conflict finally escalated to armed conflict on October 10. On the 14th, Sun Yat-sen decided to use force to put down the revolt, and on the 15th, he attacked the merchants' base, destroying the army of the merchants two days later.
