Azum - Azum

...From the collapse of the military regime in 1954 to the formation of the United Arab Republic in 1958, Syrian politics were greatly influenced by external factors such as the Baghdad Pact of 1955, the Iraqi conspiracy in 1956, and the American conspiracy in 1957. The Communist Party and the Ba'ath Party, which had support from intellectuals, students, workers, and farmers, and the nationalists (left wing of the Ba'ath Party) and the Democratic Bloc centered around Azm al-'Azm (1900-65), who were allied with them, united to oppose domestic reactionaries who were allied with imperialist powers such as the People's Party and the Nationalist Party, and conservative groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and the PPS who supported them. In 1958, the Ba'ath Party, the left wing of the Nationalist Party, and nationalist officers, with the consent of the People's Party, merged with the Egyptian Nasser regime to form the United Arab Republic.
