Xiangtan

A prefecture-level city in the middle reaches of the Xiangjiang River in the eastern part of Hunan Province, China. It governs two city districts and Xiangtan County, and acts as the governing agent for the county-level cities of Xiangxiang and Shaoshan (as of 2016). Population: 2.915 million (2014). Xiangtan County was established during the Tang Dynasty, and the county's urban area became a city in 1950. Heavy industries such as metallurgy, electrical machinery, and machinery are based here, as well as textile industries. The Beijing-Guang Line runs through the eastern part of Xiangtan County along the Shanghai-Kunming Line, and there is convenient water transportation on the Xiangjiang River and the Lianshui River. It is known as the hometown of many famous people, including Mao Zedong, late Qing Dynasty politician Zeng Guofan, late Qing Dynasty to modern painter Qi Baishi, and Peng Dehuai, a marshal of the People's Republic of China. The city is home to scenic spots and historical sites such as Guansheng Temple and Yuhu Park.

中国、湖南(こなん)省東部、湘江(しょうこう)中流にある地級市。2市轄区と湘潭県を管轄し、湘郷(しょうきょう)、韶山(しょうざん)の2県級市の管轄代行を行う（2016年時点）。人口291万5000（2014）。唐代に湘潭県が置かれ、1950年県の市街地が市となった。冶金、電機、機械などの重工業のほか紡織工業も立地する。滬昆(ここん)線（上海(シャンハイ)―昆明(こんめい)）に沿い、湘潭県東部に京広線が通じ、湘江や漣水(れんすい)の水運の便もある。毛沢東(もうたくとう)をはじめ、清(しん)末の政治家・曽国藩(そうこくはん)、清末から現代の画家・斉白石(せいはくせき)、中華人民共和国元帥の彭徳懐(ほうとくかい)ら著名人の故郷として知られる。市内には関聖殿、雨湖(うこ)公園などの名勝、史跡がある。
