Jean de Joinville

French chronicler. Born into the family of the steward of the Count of Champagne. After his father's death, he served Louis IX and participated in the Seventh Crusade (1248-1254). He was briefly taken prisoner in Egypt along with the king. As a close friend of the king, he was always by his side, but did not participate in the final Crusade (the Eighth, 1270). In his later years, after turning 80, he wrote "Memoirs of Saint Louis ( Mémoires of Mémoire de Joinville)" (1305-1309) at the request of Jeanne de Navarre. This vividly depicts the words and deeds of Louis IX as an exemplary Christian, and is one of the precious documents that convey the atmosphere of the times.

フランスの年代記作家。シャンパーニュ伯の家令の家に生まれる。父の死後ルイ9世に仕え第7回十字軍（1248～1254）に参加。エジプトで国王とともに一時捕虜になる。国王の親友としてつねに傍らにあったが、最後の十字軍（第8回、1270）には参加しなかった。晩年80歳を超えてからジャンヌ・ド・ナバルの要請で『聖王ルイ伝（ジョアンビル殿の回想録）』Mémoiresを書いた（1305～1309）。これは模範的キリスト教徒としてのルイ9世の言行を活写し、時代の雰囲気を伝える貴重な文献の一つとなっている。
