1820‐64 A leader of the early anti-French movement in southern Vietnam. Truong Cong Dinh, also known as Zhang Kung Dinh, was born the son of a military officer in Gia Dinh (Saigon) Province. When the French invaded the south in 1859, he and his father fought in the resistance under Nguyen Thi Phuong, fighting in the Siege of Saigon in the same year and the Battle of Ky Hoa in 1861. Even after the Treaty of Saigon was signed in 1862 and Gia Dinh and two other provinces became French territories, he continued to fight in Thanh Hoa in the Go Cong region of the lower Mekong, calling himself "Van Lin (a signatory to the Treaty of Saigon), a traitor to the country and an abandoner of the imperial court."
