The capital of Paraiba state in northeastern Brazil. Population 497,306 (1991). Located in a humid tropical forest area, it was founded as early as 1585 by sugarcane colonists (formerly known as Filipeia). As it is located in a sugarcane monoculture area, its economic activity is not as strong as that of Campina Grande further inland, and it is the political and administrative center of the city. Industries of edible oil, textiles, and cement are thriving. It is close to Recife (126 km), but its role as a port has been taken over by Cabedelo, so the city is not growing as a city.
