A full-length novel by British author Somerset Maugham. Published in 1915. Maugham's masterpiece, with strong autobiographical elements. The protagonist, Philip Carey, loses his parents at a young age and is taken in by his uncle, where he grows up tormented by various feelings of inferiority due to his physical defects. As a young man, he struggles with relationships with women, but eventually reaches the realization that if life is meaningless, then death is also meaningless. He finds happiness by marrying Sally, an ordinary, healthy woman who could be described as the very embodiment of nature itself. The title is borrowed from the title of four books by Dutch philosopher Spinoza, including Ethics, "On the Serfdom of Man."
