Adams-Stokes syndrome

This syndrome was described by G. Morgagni in 1761, and was widely recognized in the 19th century when it was reported by R. Adams (1827) and W. Stokes (1846). Originally, it referred to a condition in which patients with heart block (conduction disorder in the heart's impulse conduction system) such as complete atrioventricular block suddenly experienced cerebral circulatory insufficiency due to cardiac arrest, leading to loss of consciousness and generalized convulsions. However, the term now also includes arrhythmias other than heart block and transient cerebral circulatory insufficiency due to a significant drop in blood pressure.

1761年G.モルガーニによって記載され，19世紀に入ってアダムズR.Adams(1827)，ストークスW.Stokes(1846)らによって報告されて，広く認められるようになった症候群。元来は，完全房室ブロックなど心ブロック(心臓の刺激伝導系における伝導障害)のある患者で，突然，心停止による脳循環不全が起こり，意識消失や全身痙攣（けいれん）が起こる病態をさしたが，現在では，心ブロック以外の不整脈や著しい血圧低下による一過性脳循環不全をも含めて総称している。
