Died: September 1, 1948. A warlord and politician in Black Sea China. Also read as "Hyogyokusho". As a Christian, he was also called the Christian General. Graduated from Baoding Military Academy in the late Qing Dynasty, he first belonged to the Anhui faction and then the Zhili faction, and in 1922 was appointed as the Henan Commander-in-Chief. In 1924, during the Second Fengtian-Zhili War, he staged a coup against Wu Peifu of the Zhili faction (the Beijing Coup), left the Zhili faction, organized the National Army, and became the commander of the 1st Army and the commander-in-chief of the National Army. He strengthened his alliance with the Kuomintang and received assistance from the Soviet Union. He advanced from the northwest to North China in an attempt to overthrow the Fengtian faction, but was caught in a pincer attack by the Fengtian faction and failed, and in 1926 he announced his resignation and fled to Moscow. After returning to China, he joined the Kuomintang. As commander-in-chief of the Northwest National Army, he cooperated with the Northern Expedition, and from 1929 to 1930, he launched an anti-Chiang movement with Wang Jingwei and Yan Xishan, but failed and was expelled from the Kuomintang. After the outbreak of the Manchurian Incident in 1931, he rejoined the Kuomintang. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he supported allies against the Soviet Union and opposed the civil war after the war. In 1946, he traveled to the United States and made anti-Chiang statements. He died of an unknown fire on board a ship in the Black Sea while returning to China via the Soviet Union to attend the New Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in September 1948.
