A deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family. Native to East Asia. It was introduced to Japan from China long ago and cultivated there. It is distributed throughout the country, but the main production area is Nagano. From March to April, the branches are covered with crimson-purple flowers that are slightly larger than plums. The fruits are harvested from June to July. There are few varieties that can be eaten raw, and most are varieties for processing. The seeds are used for medicinal purposes (apricot kernel water). バラ科の落葉小高木。東アジア原産。日本には，古く中国より渡来し栽培された。全国的に分布しているが，主産地は長野。３〜４月，スモモよりやや大きな紅紫色の花を枝いっぱいにつける。果実は６〜７月に収穫。生食用品種は少なく，多くは加工用品種。種子は薬用（杏仁(きょうにん)水）。アプリコットともいう。
