A deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family. Native to East Asia. It was introduced to Japan from China long ago and cultivated there. It is distributed throughout the country, but the main production area is Nagano. From March to April, the branches are covered with crimson-purple flowers that are slightly larger than plums. The fruits are harvested from June to July. There are few varieties that can be eaten raw, and most are varieties for processing. The seeds are used for medicinal purposes (apricot kernel water).
