1914‐ Italian conductor. He studied under Toscanini for a time. He made his debut in Rome in 1944. After World War II, he started working in opera when he performed La Traviata with M. Callas at the Bergamo Festival in 1951. In 1954, he became the principal conductor of La Scala in Milan, but resigned three years later to perform as a guest with orchestras in Europe and the United States. In 1978, he became the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, succeeding Z. Mehta. He combines the rich lyrical quality and intellectual compositional ability that are unique to Italians, and is particularly highly regarded for his performances of symphonies by F. Schubert, Dvorak, and G. Mahler. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
