Śrī Nārāyaṇa Guru

1854‐1928
A modern Indian religious and social reformer. Born in Chembaland near Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, to an untouchable Eelawa caste family. In 1884, he left his wife and became a monk. In 1888, at the age of 34, he experienced a major turning point in his life. He realized that it was pointless to seek liberation for himself alone, and began to work for the religious and social salvation of the lower classes. In 1903, he founded the Sri Narayana Dharma Promotion Society (SNDP Yogam) in Alvipuram. Based on the philosophy of Advaita Nirvana, he built many temples and monasteries for the lower classes, implemented various reforms, banned alcohol, abolished old customs, and devoted himself to criticizing the caste system.

近代インドの宗教･社会改革者。ケーララ州の州都トリバンドラムの近くにあるチェンバランディで，不可触民イーラワー･カーストの家に生まれた。1884年妻と別れて出家，88年，34歳のとき大きな転機を経験，自分のみの解脱を求めることを無意味と考え，下層の人々の宗教的･社会的救済にのり出し，1903年シュリー･ナーラーヤナ法(ダルマ)普及協会(S.N.D.P.Yogam)をアルビプラムに設立。不二一元論派の哲学に立脚し，〈人類には，一つのカースト，一つの宗教，一つの神〉をスローガンにして，各地に多くの寺院や僧院を下層民のために建立，種々の改革を断行し，飲酒を禁じ，旧習を廃し，カースト制度に対する批判運動などに没頭した。
