...A reduction reaction that converts the carbonyl group of a ketone or aldehyde into a methylene group, _CH2 . It was discovered almost simultaneously by two chemists, N. Kishner in 1911 and L. Wolff in 1912. A carbonyl compound is first converted into a hydrazone (formula (1)), which is then heated in the presence of an alkali to obtain a reduced product (formula (2)). Generally, the hydrazone is isolated from the reaction of formula (1) and then the reaction of formula (2) is carried out, but recently, a method in which the hydrazone is reduced directly with an alkali without being isolated is used. ...
