An old town in Kodama County in northwest Saitama Prefecture. It occupies the hills at the northern foot of the Chichibu Mountains. The town center was a post station on the Kamakura Kaido road in the Middle Ages, and developed as a market town in the early modern period. It is served by the Hachiko Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway. Rice and field crops are cultivated here. An industrial complex has been developed and companies have moved in. The former home of Hanawa Hokiichi (historic site) is located here. It was incorporated into Honjo City in January 2006. 52.99 km2 . Population: 21,675 (2003).
