Lyceum (English spelling)

The Lyceum was a cultural improvement movement that began in the United States in the first half of the 19th century and an organization that promoted it. Its name comes from the Lyceum, a school that Aristotle opened on the outskirts of Athens. It was started in 1826 by educator Josiah Holbrook (1788-1854) in Millbury, Massachusetts, with the aim of educating the working and artisan classes in science and useful general knowledge. The movement expanded, and in 1831 a national organization, the American Lyceum, was founded, and by 1834 there were approximately 3,000 of them nationwide.

19世紀前半のアメリカで始まった文化向上運動およびその推進機関。名称は，アリストテレスがアテナイ郊外に開いた学校リュケイオンLykeionに由来する。1826年，教育家ホールブルックJosiah Holbrook(1788‐1854)が労働者と職人階級を主要対象に，科学と有用な一般知識の相互教育を目的にマサチューセッツ州ミルベリーで開始。運動は拡大し，31年には全国組織〈アメリカ･ライシーアム〉が発足，34年には全国に約3000を数えた。
